App horizontal orientation in regard to UI/Gestures

It would be great if the app itself could remain in portrait orientation at all times, even when the device is held in landscape. This would allow the bottom-edge exit gesture to remain consistent and usable from the bottom of the device, regardless of how the phone is being held.

Of course, photos and videos captured in landscape should still be recorded with the correct orientation, and the camera UI should adapt accordingly. Essentially, it would work the same way as the stock Camera app on iOS, where the app’s underlying orientation remains consistent while the UI elements and captured media adapt to the device’s physical orientation.

You can achieve this currently by enabling the iOS portrait lock and enabling “Ignore System Portrait Lock” in the app’s settings menu under “Interface”.

We also have an orientation lock feature (swipe down on the viewfinder to access), but it locks the capture orientation in addition to the interface.

I’m not really following the utility here though. Is the only benefit the location of the home indicator? The current behavior was requested by a large number of users who expect the app interface to rotate natively, especially for mirroring purposes.

Yes, the main usability benefit is keeping the Home Indicator / bottom-edge gesture bar consistently in the same physical position, just like it works in the stock iOS Camera app.

I’m aware that this can currently be achieved by enabling iOS Portrait Lock and using the “Ignore System Portrait Lock” option. However, I want Portrait Lock to remain disabled system-wide, so having to manually enable it every time I use this particular app isn’t really practical.

Regarding users who prefer the interface to rotate natively, I completely understand that use case, especially for mirroring. Perhaps this could simply be offered as an option in the app’s Interface settings, allowing users to choose between a rotating interface and a portrait-locked interface while still allowing the capture orientation and UI elements to adapt normally.

That way, both behaviors could be supported depending on the user’s preference.

Noted. Not sure how likely this will be in the near future, but I’ll keep the request around.
