I know Moment already has a way to separate AEL and AFL, using a double-tap gesture. And I really appreciate that this functionality already exists.
However, this is slightly different from what I’m requesting.
With the current AEL/AFL separation, the exposure and focus can be separated and then locked independently. The problem is that when I tap a new area, the exposure is still re-evaluated based on that area before being locked.
What I’m looking for is neither locking nor re-metering.
For example, let’s say the current exposure is already correct.
I then tap on a dark subject:
Current behavior I’m trying to avoid:
Tap dark subject → exposure re-meters for that area → image becomes brighter → exposure gets locked/separated.
What I’m asking for:
Tap dark subject → focus moves to that subject → exposure stays exactly where it was → no AE lock → no exposure re-metering.
The exposure should simply continue behaving as it normally would in Auto Exposure.
So I’m essentially looking for a third behavior:
1. Focus + Exposure
Tap → both focus and exposure follow the tapped area.
2. Separate AEL / AFL
Double-tap → focus and exposure can be separated and locked independently.
3. Focus Only — what I’m requesting
Tap → focus temporarily prioritizes the tapped subject, but exposure does not react to the tap at all.
When the camera moves/reframes, it can return to normal Auto Focus behavior.
The key difference is:
I don’t want to lock anything. I just don’t want the tap-to-focus action to influence exposure metering.
Maybe this could simply be called “Focus Only” as a tap behavior option:
Tap Behavior
• Focus + Exposure
• Focus Only
This would be a really nice-to-have feature for me. 🙏
